What is a mentor?
Benefits of Mentorship
  • Improves school attendance and performance – leading to increased graduation rates, increased postsecondary education, and higher lifetime earnings
  • Reduces truancy – resulting in reduced school costs and, ultimately, reduced high school dropouts and increase lifetime earnings
  • Improves health outcomes – including reductions in teen pregnancy, reduced or delayed use of tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drugs
  • Reduces juvenile crime (both violence and property crimes) – saving victim costs, court costs, and costly treatment of juvenile offenders
  • Reduces costs of adult crime – both the crime losses of victims and the societal costs of prosecuting and incarcerating adult offenders
  • Reduces needs for social services – both near-term costs of counseling and long-term costs of public assistance
Mentor Responsibilities
  • Duration: Minimum of 1 – 2 years.
  • Frequency: Minimum of 2 face-to-face visits per month with a goal of 4-contact hours per month.
  • Quarterly Mentor Meetings/Training (optional-but recommended)
  • Monthly Group Activities (optional)
